Label History

Rewind: Ram Records was established by Andy C and Ant Miles in the summer of 1992. Boldly placing itself at the very forefront of a genre that didn't even exist, Ram has played a consistently dominant role in the foundation and continuous development of drum & bass ever since.

Originally an outlet for Andy C's own productions and projects - including the massive, genre-defining Origin Unknown output - the label quickly cultivated its own distinctive sonic signature and roster of hugely talented artists. Under the captaincy of label manager Scott Bourne, this advancement has never stopped and has gone on to found careers of household names in the widest possible realms of electronic music such as Chase & Status, Sub Focus and Wilkinson.

Follow Ram Records' discography and you'll follow the very twists and turns of drum & bass itself. From its post-hardcore roots to the precipice of drum & bass's genre-melting future; from the demonstrative darkness of the late 90s to the festival electrifying vocal-led cuts of now… The label's output has not only reflected the most exciting aspects of the genre, but has been influential in progressing it by a combination of working with THE best artists of every era and maintaining a scene-standard production benchmark that is notoriously high.

Similarly, if you follow Ram Records' activities, you'll follow the very twists and turns of the music industry itself… The development from 12s to albums. The transition from physical to digital. The necessity of strong, meticulously produced, events and tours. The culture of identifying and signing new talent exclusively. Ram Records and its sister imprints Frequency and Program have remained at the top of one of the most volatile and fickle creative sectors for over two decades. And they have done so completely independently.

Fast Forward: Over 20 years deep and Ram Records is no longer just at the very forefront of drum & bass but electronic music at large. Its artists dominate the many multi-genre line-ups at the best events around the world. And its output, while still predominantly 170BPM, reflects the rude state of creative health dance music is enjoying: boundaries have blurred, rules are broken and as the dancefloor's many facets and flavours continue to morph, mutate and melt, one thing remains sure… Ram will always be leading the charge.

RAM TIMELINE

1992 Aged 16, Andy established Ram on a budget of £1000 and a logo designed by his sister. Andy's debut Ram release Sour Mash encapsulates hardcore's development into the darker, twisted sounds of drum & bass jungle.

1993 Andy C and Ant Miles' Origin Unknown project release the genre-defining 'Valley Of The Shadows'; a classic that's still received and reloaded rapturously to this day. Other key releases include Uncle 22's '6 Million Ways To Die' and Andy C's bassline behemoth 'Something New'.

1994 A key year for drum & bass jungle, seminal releases for Ram this year were Andy C & Randall's 'Sound Control', Desired State's 'Beyond Bass' and 'Predator' by the then unknown Shimon who quickly established himself as key member of the ever-building Ram Records family and went on to play a major part in the Ram Trilogy with Ant Miles and Andy C.

1995 Origin Unknown's 'Truly One' compounds the deep, rolling sound of the time. Andy's 'Cool Down/Roll On' EP developed this scope even more. As did Stakka & K.Tee's 'Danger Zone/Hear Say' release.

1996 Ram release their first album – Origin Unknown Presents 'Speed Of Sound' – and support it with their first full European tour. It's also the year Andy and Shimon took things next level with 'Quest' and 'Night Flight'.

1997 Amid releases from Andy C and Shimon and Andy and Ant's Concept 2 project, the Ram roster develops again with the addition of Moving Fusion who make their label debut with the massive 'Turbulence'… A track that made such an impact on the wider dance music scene it picked up Mixmag's Tune Of The Year accolade.

1998 Legendary London venue The End invite Ram to host an event. It went down so well the label remained there until the club's closure in 2009, making Ram the longest running residency in the club's history. On the release front things go next level with Origin Unknown's second album 'Sound In Motion' and Andy, Ant and Shimon's triple-chapter Ram Trilogy release series.

1999 Another big year for Ram Trilogy as they release their only album 'Molten Beats'. The year is equally big for Moving Fusion as they develop their unique sound with their pivotal EP 'The Beginning'.

2000 The label launches the 'Ram Raiders' series which featured tracks from every member of the label's roster. It went on to become Andy C's first label mix CD the following year, setting the foundation for his agenda-setting 'Nightlife' mix series. Elsewhere Moving Fusion's multi-shade style continues to flourish with their 'Atlantis' EP, Ram Trilogy continue to dominate with their fittingly titled 'Titan' EP and Ram Records pick up their first ever Best Label trophy at the K Mag Awards.

2001 The year Andy and Shimon's Body Rock shattered the scene. Its hip-shaking triplet signature led to a UK chart sensation, hitting 28, which was largely unheard of for an instrumental tune. 2001 was also the year Shimon went solo with the mighty 'Hush Hush' and legendary D&B pioneers Bad Company UK appeared on Ram Records with the show-stopping 'Spacehopper'

2002 Another pivotal year for releases: Moving Fusion release their incendiary debut album 'The Start Of Something', Ram Trilogy unleash three more chapters of madness and Ram launch their sister label Frequency. A stable dedicated to nurturing fresh of talent early releases included material from Kryptic Minds who've gone on to make big moves in the dubstep scene. Ram also wins another Best Label crown at the Accelerated Culture Awards.

2003 DJ Fresh makes big waves on Ram throughout 2003 with his 'Music Maker' EP and evergreen classic 'Signal'. Meanwhile Andy released the debut Nightlife series mix CD which has gone on to be the biggest and best selling drum & bass mix series of all time. 2003 also sees another Best Label win at the Accelerated Culture Awards.

2004 In the year Ram Records pick up their third Accelerated Culture Best Label award, Nightbreed's heavy duty release 'A Pack Of Wolves' sets the rock-influenced agenda complete with an early remix from Pendulum. DJ Fresh makes two more appearances with 'Twister/Capture The Flag' and 'Hooded'. Sub Focus makes the leap from Frequency to Ram and Andy C unleashes a second 'Nightlife' mix album.

2005 Sub Focus goes in heavy with a series of big releases including 'X-Ray' and 'Frozen Solid'. Loadstar's Xample also makes his Ram debut appearance, playing a critical role on the label's first Dimensions EP series with 'Heaven & Hell'.

2006 A great year for both fresh and familiar faces. Noisia made a one-off appearance with 'Façade' and Concord Dawn appear on the second 'Dimensions' EP which also featured Culture Shock's label debut. It's also the year Andy C releases the third volume in his highly-collectable 'Nightlight' series.

2007 Ram hits 15 years and celebrates with the massive '15x15' album that featured one track from each year. 2007 was also the year Ram signed Chase & Status and their foundation setting 'Dumpling Riddim', won BBC 1Xtra's Best Label award and released 'Asteroids'… Penned by Culture Shock, it was the label's first ever house outing.

2008 Another big year: Ram score their first National Drum & Bass Award Best Label title, Loadstar's Lomax signs to the label and the third 'Dimensions' EP features the likes of Brookes Brothers and Icicle & Nymfo. Meanwhile Sub Focus explores his techno tendencies with 'Timewarp' and Chase & Status let rip with their debut LP 'More Than Alot'. It does so well they get invited to play BBC Maida Vale. Twice!

2009 The End closes forever and Ram move to Matter, generating the highest recorded attendance of 3600. Sub Focus's 'Rock-It' does damage on all corners of the dance and enters the Top 40 while Chase & Status also get their first chart success with 'End Credits'. Hitting number nine in the UK it neatly complemented the duo's influence on the underground as their dubstep track 'Eastern Jam' enjoyed huge success in the clubs. Sub Focus finished the year with his extensive and accomplished self-titled album. Plus: Ram win two Best Label titles at both the National Drum & Bass Awards and Drum&BassArena Awards.

2010 A momentous year for new talent as Ram exclusively signs Delta Heavy, Hamilton, Wilkinson and Mind Vortex. Sub Focus reinforces the label's multi-genre abilities with the piano-hammering 'Could This Be Real' while Xample & Lomax pave the way for their Loadstar projects with the huge 'Link To The Past'. As Matter closes, Ram moves to Fabric to become the venue's quickest ever selling event and Andy releases 'Nightlife 5', the highest selling compilation of the series at that time. Two more trophies this year came from the National Drum & Bass Awards for Best Label and Best Event

2011 Ram Records hits 100 releases. To celebrate, Andy releases his long sought after 'Finders Keepers' and the label enjoy their busiest release schedule so far… Highlights include DJ Fresh's 'Future Jungle' EP, Culture Shock's 'Protection/Ohrwurm', Break's 'Hot Love', Wilkinson's 'Tonight' Delta Heavy's 'Overkill'. Also this year Andy C launches his Alive show in Sheffield Octagon and Chase & Status release their second album 'No More Idols' and hit number five in the UK charts with 'Blind Faith'.

2012 Ram Records' 20th anniversary year was the label's biggest to date: Calyx & Teebee and Rene LaVice are exclusively signed to the label, Program Records is launched, both BBC Radio 1 and Mixmag document the label extensively and Ram makes more global appearances than ever before, hosting stages and events such as EDC Las Vegas, SW4, Miami and a legendary 12 hour Fabric takeover. Calyx & Teebee release their second album 'All Or Nothing' and end the year with major wins: 'Elevate This Sound' scores Best Single at the Drum&BassArena Awards, 'Pure Gold' wins Best Video, the duo win Best Producers and Ram Records win Best Label.

2013 Things get busier again for Ram. In the year they win Best Label prizes at Drum&BassArena Awards, National Drum & Bass Awards and DJ Mag Awards, they released 114 tracks on Ram and 23 on Program. Event-wise the label hosted 47 events and stages in 13 different countries. The family broadens once again with Chords, June Miller and Frankee all signing exclusively, Loadstar unleash their debut album 'Future Perfect' and Andy C takes things next level with 'Nightlife 6'. Featuring over 100 tracks across three CDs, including his first productions in over 10 years, it was his biggest and most successful in the series so far. Chart success abounds as Sub Focus hits the top 10 twice with 'Endorphins' and 'Turn Back Time' while Wilkinson sets the highest D&B chart position of the year with 'Afterglow', which also won Best Track at the Drum&BassArena Awards.

6. Product Prices & VAT

I live outside of the UK. Will you charge me VAT?

Our pricing policy is to offer our products at the same price to all customers, wherever they live. The tax rules are such that we have to pay VAT on all purchases made within the EC (except for certain tax free areas e.g. Jersey, Andorra etc). So to areas where tax applies, we charge the price displayed and pay the relevant tax to the UK government. Where VAT does not apply we still charge the displayed amount. We have taken this decision to encourage European e-commerce and to make sure that the additional costs in trading with non-European community countries are covered. Unfortunately, as a result of this policy, we are not able to refund VAT charged for any of the tax free areas within the EC as we do not charge VAT to these areas. But you will not be charged any more than any other customer.
